Burgos 13 miles
I was so set to walk 11 today and as usual it always seems like it’s an extra 2 miles to the hotel.
All I can say is that we made it to our rest day. Woo hoo. This means no walking until Tuesday.
Today was one of my favorite walks. We got on the road about 8:20 am and it started to mist at about the one mile mark and we had to don our rain gear.
I had de ja vu with the rocky incline that reminded me of the dragon’s teeth way back on day three. Luckily it didn’t last long. Thank goodness the rain didn’t last long either but the air was cool.
We read that there was an alternate route getting into Burgos and we took it. It followed the River Arlanzón and we walked along the south bank and it was pure beauty. All the locals were out walking, jogging, biking. We passed swans, ducks and many cute dogs, some not on leash.
This river runs the entire way to Burgos and when we finally made it to our hotel, the Crisol Mesón del Cid, in the square of the Cathedral, and we were all in awe of the Cathedral. We will go to the Pilgrim Mass tonight and tour it tomorrow.
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos is a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It took several hundred years to complete because of a hiatus.
It was also name a UNESCO world heritage site in 1984.

From the Google, and where the name of hotel comes from:
Namely, it is the burial place of El Cid, otherwise known as Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. El Cid was a famous Castillian leader and hero during the 11th century. His life was immortalized in the epic “Cantar del Mio Cid”. He is buried under the nave in the Main Chapel.
We are actually going to go to dinner Spanish style at 830 pm. I hope I can stay awake…
