Hospital de Orbiga 12 miles
Today was supposed to be at least 18 miles give or take 1 or 2 miles. We taxied out of industrial Leon and shaved off 6 miles give or take and it was well worth it. We got out of the taxi in San Miguel del Camino and the Camino path was still next to the road with busy trucks and fast cars until at least 9 miles into our walk. I would say it was the least beautiful day of walking.
On a positive note we hit our 300 mile mark today!
When we hit about ten miles in, the poppies were absolutely gorgeous and we could see snow on the mountain range in the distance and from what I can find it could be the Leonese mountain range but I could be wrong.
We finally entered the beautiful town of Hospital de Orbiga and I think I am more of a small town girl because it is so much nicer walking into the small town versus walking endless miles of industrial city asphalt. But I did love our Leon hotel and the much needed respite.
Our home tonight is owned by a beautiful woman, Marina, who lives upstairs with her energetic dog, Nico and her funny cat Chachi.
Hospital de Orbigo is a beautiful little town with cobblestone streets, old houses and a picturesque
Medieval bridge called Puente del Paso Honroso. We hung out for a bit, then ventured across the bridge to find a delicious restaurant. We asked about a pilgrim Mass and the mayor of the town happened to be in the restaurant and he told us that it was the celebratory day of Saint Isidore the Farmer. Kathryn and I ventured back across the bridge to check it out the festivities but nothing was happening. I forgot to mention that it is very cold again and we had cold wind blowing against us our entire walk. Marina said this weather is unusually cold for this time of the year.
We head to Astorga tomorrow and it is chocolate town. We are excited about that and that it is only about 10 miles.
