Portomarín 14 miles
I loved today. We had amazing weather. It was perfectly chilly with the sun shining pretty much all day and all afternoon. The warmth was quite welcomed.
The hike today of “rolling hills” had an altitude gain of 1500 feet, just enough to get some Albariño white wine for lunch.
The scenery was amazing today and the final walk into Portomarin was just beautiful. We crossed over the largest river Rio Mino over a very long modern bridge that lead to a medieval set of stairs that we had to climb to get into the main town. The river is the largest that I have seen so far on the Camino. I did read that the original wall to the city and housing can be seen under water but I didn’t notice. The original Roman city was moved and updated in the 1950s.
As far as numbers in peregrinos walking, so far it seems like a rumor because I don’t seem to think it’s exorbitant in numbers so far.
We had a fabulous lunch and yes I do eat like a local (I’m a real foodie). I tried the Orajo digestivo liquor after lunch and Kathryn tried the tinto verano (Spanish version of sangria) and both were delish.
Portomarin is a cute and little, very clean town. We ventured out and about to the Iglesia San Nicholas just in time for a free pilgrim concert with a solo act of a very talented musician who first played the flute, then the organ and then did Gregorian chants. The church was packed with pilgrims and some were sitting in the floor.
We have less than 100 km left until we arrive in Santiago, hard for me to fathom.
Amazing day and I look forward to tomorrow.
